I wrote this for folk harp, so there are no key changes, just mode changes (which use the same scale with a different tonal center). As a folk harp player, I wanted to add to the classical repertoire for that instrument, and since I also play flute and a little cello those instruments also appealed. That said, I felt the ensemble made a lot of musical sense - three different instruments (plucked strings, low bowed strings, and high wind) that represented the most pleasant sounding of their family.

My goal here was to write a string quartet in the style of Beethoven, Haydn, and the other classical masters, but with my own style and influences. Much of it has an underlying rock/metal rhythmic sense, and there are elements of Iron Maiden (last movement), Marillion (Adagio), and Eastern European Roma (Gypsy) folk (first movement). Rather than write something to please the modern music academic, I wrote something that I personally enjoy - and hopefully, you also! It's classical music that rocks!

The Carpe Diem Quartet, a professional ensemble that has recorded for Naxos records, has done a wonderful job of bringing this music to life - with the polish and refinement of a true classical ensemble, but with the ability to bring out the energy and excitement of the rock'n'roll influences.
