Inspired by heavy metal instrumentals (such as Iron Maiden's "Losfer Words"), this piece is full of driving rhythms, clear forms, and strong melodies, with bass-guitar inspired cello lines and harmony-guitar style violin parts. There's even a "guitar-solo" section in the first movement development where each instrument gets to shine, with the Kodak Quartet providing their own cadenzas! Rooted in common-practice classical music like Beethoven, this work is in the traditional four movements, with sonata and rondo form movements. It seeks to strike a balance between "tradition" and "modernist." Much of it is rooted in standard keys, consonance, and meters. Modernist characteristics (dissonance, odd and unstable meters, nonstandard scales) are used to create areas of unstability and departure, much like classical-era music used key areas. Overall, the goal is to have something that seems neither stuck in the 18th Century past nor stuck in the 20th Century past, but to be new and fresh - something that is exciting and accessible to the average musical lister as well as interesting to the student of modern music.-
